Taiki e boys.jpg

A passion project started October 2020 with the objective of moving the Tairāwhiti community from low paying employment into the information technology (IT) industry (high valued, future ready employment).

A pilot Tech talent incubator programme was developed, with a  particular focus on Maori which had the audacious goal of:

"Building a local Tairāwhiti Tech-workforce where people from our community are trained, employed and developed in our region" Phil Kupenga

The programme consists of the following:

  • If selected Tairāwhiti locals will do the online Enspiral Dev Academy 17-week boot camp course.

  • We provided all candidates with laptops, screens and computer accessories if needed

  • Candidates are provided a remote dedicated tutor for the region

  • They sit within the Tāiki E Impact house in Gisborne where the candidates can work together in one venue, have access to internet and sit in a tikanga Māori based environment

  • In Taiki E we provide a dedicated support person

  • On completion of the course, we are looking to get students into employment locally (pathway to employment model).

FAQ

What is the Tairāwhiti Tech Talent Incubator?

The Tairāwhiti Tech Talent Incubator is a programme aimed at moving the Tairāwhiti community, from low-paying employment into the information technology (IT) industry. The programme provides training, support, and a pathway to high-valued, future-ready employment.

Who is eligible to join the programme?

The programme is open to Tairāwhiti locals. Candidates should have a strong interest in pursuing a career in IT and be committed to completing a 17-week intensive Fulltime boot camp.

What does the programme include?

The programme includes enrollment in the Dev Academy Aotearoa 17-week online boot camp to become a Full Stack Web Developer. Participants need to have access to their own laptops, screens, and other necessary computer accessories. In some cases we might be able to provide these but this is not guaranteed.

Dev Academy Aotearoa has now a part time offering during the year for those who need more time to study and fulltime courses do have study link and student loans if needed . Talk to Dev Academy about this. Dev Academy Aotearoa will provide a dedicated remote tutor & Taiki E provides community support along with a venue namely Haututu Hack Lab situated in Treble Court, Peel Street, Gisborne.

How to apply?

The recruitment process starts with seeing with reading this and looking at the Dev Academy site to see if there are any questions. If keen then all must visit Haututu Hacklab and will be shown the venue and from there it is recommended to apply direct to Dev Academy Aotearoa. Dev Academy will do there separate recruitment process and if successful then you will be accepted onto the programme.

What are expectations on successful candidates that are accepted on the course?

It is expected that all successful candidates accepted onto the course work from Haututu Hack Lab. The rationale for this is that it starts to get candidates use to working from an office environment which will help them in the future. It also is important as you have opportunities to get known by the community and builds your network. This gives you a chance to get employment after completing the course

What happens after I complete the boot camp?

After completing the boot camp, the programme will aim to place graduates into local employment within the IT industry (but this is not guaranteed). As mentioned above most students who have build their network and get known by the community have given them a better chance to get employment than those who just worked from home.

Other things to note?

Many of our successful graduates who have passed the course have got employed and are still employed today. In all cases it has been life changing but all of them have had their ups and downs but have shown resilience and trusted the process. Good luck and hoping you get on the course.
